The 7-second landing page test

If a stranger can't tell what you sell in 7 seconds, you don't have a CRO problem, you have a clarity problem.

Landing page conversion rate optimisation framework for D2C and B2B brands

The test

Open your landing page. Set a timer for 7 seconds. Show it to someone who has never seen your brand. When the timer ends, ask them:

  • What does this company sell?
  • Who is it for?
  • What should I do next?

If they can't answer all three clearly, you have a clarity problem. And a clarity problem is a conversion problem. And a conversion problem is a CAC problem.

Why 7 seconds

The average mobile user gives a new landing page 7 seconds before deciding whether to stay or leave. This is not a made-up number, it comes from scroll depth and session recording analysis across thousands of landing pages. In 7 seconds, a user reads the headline, glances at the hero image, and checks the primary CTA. That's it.

Everything that happens below the fold in the first 7 seconds is invisible to a bouncing visitor.

The three clarity failures

Failure 1, Unclear headline. The headline tries to be clever instead of clear. "Elevate your morning ritual" tells me nothing about what you sell. "The protein coffee that replaces your morning supplement stack" tells me everything.

Failure 2, Mismatched promise. Your ad says "50% off your first order" but the landing page headline says "Discover our range." The user is looking for the offer they clicked on. If they don't see it immediately they think they landed on the wrong page.

Failure 3, Buried CTA. The primary action, buy, sign up, get a quote, is not immediately visible without scrolling. On mobile this kills conversion. The CTA must be visible without any scroll on every screen size.

The fix: one afternoon

Step 1: Rewrite your headline to answer "what is this and who is it for" in one sentence. Maximum clarity, minimum cleverness.

Step 2: Make sure your headline matches your ad copy. If your ad says "Free audit" your headline should say "Get your free audit." Word-for-word if necessary.

Step 3: Move your CTA above the fold. It must be visible on a 375px mobile screen without scrolling.

Step 4: Run the 7-second test again with a new person. If they pass all three questions, your clarity problem is solved.

What clarity is worth

On the Sandhya Shah campaign, a premium fashion D2C brand, we restructured the landing page clarity before scaling Google Shopping spend. The restructure focused on three changes: clearer headline, matching ad copy, and above-fold CTA. Google Shopping impression share went from below average to 67%, ranking above Myntra and Nykaa in the paid auction. 16,000+ qualified sessions delivered. The clarity fix cost zero in ad spend.

Why clicks are not converting into leads.
